1. Who is eligible for TEFA?
Eligibility is determined by the State of Texas and may vary based on program guidelines.
Basic Eligibility:
- U.S. citizen, national, or lawfully admitted resident
- Eligible to attend a Texas public or charter school
- Texas resident
Age Requirements:
- Prekindergarten: Ages 3–5 by September 1, 2026
- Kindergarten–12th Grade: Ages 5–25 by September 1, 2026
Special Note for PreK Students:
Prekindergarten students must also qualify for free public PreK, including eligibility through free/reduced lunch, emerging bilingual status, military status, foster care, homelessness, or other state criteria.
There is no income limit to apply. However, priority levels in the first year are based on disability status, income, and household size. More information is available at: https://educationfreedom.texas.gov/
2. Does applying for TEFA affect admissions to Loretto?
No. TEFA is separate from the admissions process and does not affect acceptance. Indicating interest in Loretto on the TEFA application does not constitute registration. Registration is completed separately through Admissions. Current families register through Blackbaud.
3. Can TEFA be combined with tuition assistance or scholarships?
Yes. In many cases, Loretto encourages eligible families to apply for TEFA before applying for school-based assistance. TEFA awards are typically larger and more reliable than local scholarships, which require annual reapplication. TEFA is renewable through graduation, and award amounts are expected to increase over time.
For families not awarded TEFA, Loretto continues working to expand scholarship support.
4. What if my TEFA application is not approved?
Families are encouraged to explore Loretto’s tuition assistance and scholarship programs.
5. Is my financial information private?
Yes. TEFA applications are processed through the state system and handled securely. Loretto does not have access to family financial information. Loretto’s tuition assistance applications are separate.
6. Do families need to reapply each year?
Reapplication requirements are set by TEFA and may change. Currently, families complete a short renewal process that includes a survey and submission of standardized test scores. A full reapplication is not required.
7. Do I need to report awarded funds as taxable income?
No. TEFA funds are not considered taxable income.
